  1. So I took a lot of time off from the forums to smash some practise. And this is what came up. Still not perfect, but hey it's a start. http://soundcloud.com/sergeant-hiro/half-hour-hardcore-mix-9-6-12
  2. Next paycheque.
  3. Well I got Mixed in Key because I have zero musical understanding outside of "I like that song." I don't want to make DJing too lazy for myself. There isn't any fun in having no challenge.
  4. As another noob who just got this since everyone here said "do it fgt" I'd like to know if Platinum Notes is worth it? I got this funny feeling I don't need it, though.
  5. Well, it's better than dubstep.
  6. Oh I have complete faith in myself. In fact, I'm happy I with how it turned out overall. I just know it needs work. And I know where it needs work. Don't let my odd sense of humour put you off. I know I could have done a lot worse. Edit: Also just realised I did this in the wrong section. Sorry.
  7. http://soundcloud.com/george-sano/noob-deluxe-an-asian-mixes Fuck-ups that I am aware of: - Poor application of LPF at about 0:24 and 0:35 - Slight mis-timing of the mix at about 3:35 - 2:48. Could have done better on the transformer. - 5:28 I'm too slow mixing back to the track. - 11:57 I didn't fade out fast enough, and had to cut the track. - WAAAAAY overdid the filter at 13:15 - Shitty fadeout from 15:00
  8. I work in a menswear store. I can't really level homosexuality at anyone.
  9. For the none of you who care, here is an update: I hope Laidback Luke dies in a fire (I hate his remixes, but I bet the boys at work will go bananas); I tried using BPM lock to make this shit go away faster, but I do a better job on the pitch bend than the machines (refused to use it before); and how I can work in Chris Brown without sounding like shit is beyond me. As you can guess, I'm out of my element here. Can't wait to get back to my hardcore.
  10. I kinda figured out what to do after posting this, as is usually the case. This isn't going to be pleasant. EDIT: OH GOD THIS ARIA WEBSITE SHIT IS AWFUL WHY ARE THESE GUYS IN CHARGE OF ANYTHING
  11. The boys at work want me to record them a set. They like electro/pop/whatever the kids like these days. I don't and have no idea what's popular. And I have no way of finding the songs they want/do like. Does anyone know where the hell I can find Cobra Starship/Usher remixes/extended cuts that don't suck arse? I've tried all my usual spots (iTunes, Beatport, IMO Download, TrackItDown) and so far nothing is really coming up. Failing that, how the fuck do I go about mixing pop music into this?
  12. Just checking
  13. Well uh... I do happy hardcore, does that change the rules or what? I know a lot of hardcore DJs can be pretty heavy on the effects so I don't know if thats good or bad.
  14. I cut my effect-usage even further. Is once every two songs still too much?
  15. Oh I know them all pretty well now. At least I think I do. I just wanted some cleaning up tips. I like to believe I do alright for a noob (but I probably still sound like shit)
  16. I think my question was worded poorly. How do I better time and manage my effects? Or do I just count in my head like I've been doing to varying degrees of success? I've been aware of the "less is more" rule for some time and I'm trying to abide by it, although I do go on the occasional filter/roll/jet binge just for kicks because they give me a boner. I'm watching other DJs and trying to learn their techniques so I can adapt them to my own style/tastes and make more dynamic mixes. I'm having great success in some areas and failing miserably in others. Like sampling. I'll get there eventually, but at the moment lining up and timing a sample is a bit hectic for me and it usually just comes out super-sloppy. As for recording I'd much rather record and upload and let you guys tear me to shreds. To hazard a guess I'd say there is about than 100 years experience between all the regulars so if anyone is going to give a fair, expert opinion it will be you lot. And hell, just sitting here reading the first post you made has given me a few ideas I never had. So that's a win. I have another very noob question: I've got my pet favourite YouTube DJs, and I've based a bit of my technique on their mixing style somewhat. All my friends have an opinion on them of course, but none of my friends are DJs. So are Cotts and Ravine decent examples of DJing or are they hopeless hacks? If the latter, can someone point me to some good hardcore DJs? Argh, I have too many questions for one thread. Time to hit the forum harder methinks. Also: That's the beast I'm using. I don't think it will help showing you that, but it caused an overnight improvement in my mixing so I'm happy to have it.
  17. So I got myself a Pioneer DJM2000 and holy fuck it shits on my old mixer. I figured how to use effects on the machine itself, but I'm still trying to not-suck at adding effects to the mix. Does anyone have any solid, "you must know this" kind of advice to impart with a humble idiot? Also, if you could give me some tips and tricks for the "remix" function on the touch screen I'd be grateful, but that isn't a priority right now. Cheers boys.
  18. Noob alert. In my novice adventures into mixing and DJing, I noticed that this: http://youtu.be/ol6jwtqNZoM Appears to be missing data from it's MP3. It glitches every other beat (e.g. skips from 0:01:74 to 0:02:00) and sounds like shit. It sounds fine on my computer, but as soon as I burn it to a CD, it goes spasticated and it's starting to annoy me. No other MP3 I've bought sounds this god-awful, which is annoying since I really like this track. I've purchased the MP3 from several sites and all have the same issue. I am clearly doing something wrong so I would like some suggestions as to how to fix this bullshit. Many thanks, ahead of time.
  19. I noticed as soon as I swapped to Audio that the quality was a vast improvement. But really, I'm happy everything works. Greatly appreciate the putting-up with my bullshit.
  20. Yeah I solved the issue by converting them through WinAmp and then burning an Audio CD instead of whatever I was doing before. Works perfectly.
  21. I burned a file to a disc, MP3 format and my CDJ(200) says E8305. I tried burning a new disc, that did squat. And now I'm kinda stumped because I'm still super-new to this. I got the song file from IMO Download, if that helps any. Other tracks I got from them work fine, but this one (Keyes - My Time) is really giving me the shits. As I said, sorry for the noob question. I'm still working on a solution albeit slowly. Edit: Tried mixing again and had to fuck around with VBR. Friend told me how to fix it through WinAmp so I'm all good.
  22. Thanks. I'm cruising around now to make sure I know where everything important is. In terms of gear, I got two Pioneer CDJ200s (CDs are my preference), an American Audio HTD 4.5 turntable (figured I might as well have one, just in case), and an American Audio MX-1400 DSP mixer. I realise some of this stuff was ancient history in 2008, but for the time being I don't mind using it. It was cheap second-hand stuff (got the whole lot, plus headphones and speakers) for $1500. And I don't really want to spend too much money on this stuff until I get a little better. Even then, this is just going to be a hobby for a few years.
  23. I'm a Brisbanite who really likes hardcore. I only started practising about a week ago, so I suck for the time being. Mostly here for tips and tricks in your "how not to be crap" section.
