Canada’s music scene is facing serious hurdles after changes to laws effecting foreign workers went into effect on July 31st. These new regulations, which increase the fees associated with importing international artists two, three, and even four times, have major implications for promoters, bookers, venues, and fans. Any venue whose musical bookings are only side notes to their other endeavors are now obliged by law to pay a $275 application fee per artist and for every member the artist or band brings with them. This includes key personnel like tour managers, managers, lighting and sound crews, technicians etc. Previously there was a one-time fee of $150 per band member with a $450 max associated with bookings — this fee still stands in addition to the new ones. Furthermore, should an application request be denied, these fees are non-refundable. Small businesses feel targeted but the Canadian government denies these claims citing several exceptions including “musicians in a band performing several tour dates in Canada,” and “musicians and buskers coming to Canada to perform in festivals.” However, to be eligible for these exemptions the artist must not perform in local bars or restaurants. The real kicker is venues whose sole purpose it is to put on concerts and larger festivals remain unaffected by the new regulations. Spencer Brown, booking agent for a small downtown Calgary venue affected by the changes disagrees. “They are targeting the little guy, they’re targeting small venues, they’re targeting small business,” he says. “So, me, as the promoter at The Palomino, which will hold 200 people at the best of times, is paying out $425 per band member whereas a guy from a huge promotions company putting on a 20,000-seater for Elton John in the stadium is tax free,” he says. How exactly the introduction of these regulations will play out remains unseen, but it’s fair to assume they will manifest themselves negatively. Booker’s and venues ability to choose artists will be limited and in turn, fans’ access to live performances will suffer. Smaller musicians will also feel the impact in that their ability to market themselves in Canada will see a downturn. Source: dancingastronaut.com

As the dance world eagerly awaits the October 1st release of Moby’s Innocents album, the Little Idiot labelhead has given a little something to tide the hordes over. After unveiling the album’s first single, “A Case For Shame,” last month, a new remix package of the tune has been released featuring reworks from Spartaque and Sharam Jey. Where the original is orchestral, emotional, and barely electronic, the remixes steer things back to the dance floor with a light teched out version and jangly indie-flavored take, respectively. With standard and dub versions of each mix, a spin through the remix package opens the mind to the endless possibilities of sound – and gets you exactly half an hour closer to October. https://soundcloud.com/spartaque/moby-a-case-for-shame-1 https://soundcloud.com/sharamjey/moby-a-case-for-shame-sharam Source: dancingastronaut.com

Back on the production front after resurrecting “Center of the Universe,” Axwell enlists Sick Individuals to bring their insignia and currently snowballing success to his label. On “I Am,” the duo inject the energy they brought to the X on their recent Drum Machine / Chase EP while Ax continues to push a newfound enlightening sound into the dance music sphere; release date to be announced soon. https://soundcloud.com/sickindividuals/sick-individuals-axwell-i-am Source: dancingastronaut.com

For all of 2013, Afrojack has had fans clinging onto expectations of a full-length album, one he’s promised would be released in September. Sticking to his word and releasing the lead single with Chris Brown, “As Your Friend,” Nick quickly set the tone for what could become an edgier version of dance pop with commercial collaborations in vein of “Take Over Control” or “Can’t Stop Me.” This summer, however, Afrojack returned to his roots, releasing gritty-bassline, Dutch amplified electro tracks with his It’s A Matter Of… EP, “Peanuts,” and most recently “Jack That Body.” With September around the corner, it is unsure whether the album will be delivered on schedule, but what seems to be one of its future singles have leaked. Speculatively titled “Be With You,” a big room gem that’s been heard in many of his festival sets as an instrumental is now complimented by vocals from Clinton Sparks. Fit for the radio and certainly fit for an album, “Be With You” follows the precedent set by the lead single; and if that’s the case, it appears that Afrojack’s first full length is more than just hopeful speculation. What began as an ordinary night in Boston, Massachusetts on Tuesday, August 27th, ended in tragedy at The House of Blues. Doors opened at 8pm last night at the nightclub near Fenway Park for one of Zedd’s final August tour stops. By 1am, those doors had shut and would be shut for good. It’s been reported that police responded to calls of drug overdoses at 12:42 after the venue’s on-site medical unit transported patients to local hospitals. One female was subsequently pronounced dead while one male and one female both remain in serious condition as of this morning. The House of Blues has closed doors and will be shutting down operations on their own terms after the unfortunate fatality and injury. There is no word on when it will reopen, but a spokesman for the club had the following to say: Source: dancingastronaut.com

EDM in the VMAs: Zedd, Skrillex, Calvin Harris snubbed while Daft Punk, Nervo shine Despite MTV’s recent MTV Clubland outlet, dance music stars were snubbed of awards at last night’s VMAs. There was Zedd being beat out by Austin Mahone for the fan-voted Artist to Watch, Calvin Harris falling short to Pink for Best Collaboration and to Justin Timberlake for best editing, A-Trak & Tommy Trash being toppled by Ryan Lewis & Macklemore for Best Cinematography, and both Skrillex and Duck Sauce taking a back seat to Capital Cities for Best Visual Effects. While Daft Punk was ousted by One Direction for Best Song of the Summer, the duo made their first public appearance since the Random Access Memories craze, presenting the award for Best Female Video alongside Pharrell and Nile Rodgers following a teaser for their follow up single “Lose Yourself To Dance.” Other dance music mainstays may not have taken home a moon man, but instead served as the DJs for the red carpet. Of course, that was the Nervo twins spinning the pre-show as stars and starlets entered the Barclays Center. Surprisingly, the program’s commercial interludes included tracks such as Baauer and Just Blaze’s “Higher” and Disclosure’s “When A Fire Starts To Burn.” When all said and done, however, dance music has certainly had a stronger presence in VMAs past with performances from David Guetta and Deadmau5. MTV’s 2013 award show was electronic friendly, it just wasn’t actively electronic. Source: dancingastronaut.com

Nile Rodgers confirms more dance music collaborations, hints at Daft Punk live show After accompanying the robots on their public emergence at the VMAs following the video premiere of “Lose Yourself To Dance,” their second collaboration that follows “Get Lucky,” Nile Rodgers says that Daft Punk isn’t the only electronic act he’s working with. While his collaborations with Avicii are well documented with “Lay Me Down” from True being one of six completed records, it’s being confirmed that the disco legend has been in the studio with David Guetta and that they’ve already cut two tracks. Rodgers claims “it’s a good year for me and dance music,” before going on to reveals that he’s been working on some underground focused music with Tensnake and Chase & Status. When asked about performing with Daft Punk in a live setting, Nile attempted to keep his lips sealed but simply left it at: “Something might happen.” Source: dancingastronaut.com

It's always best to go with the flow because at these sorts of events you have no idea what will happen, practice all the tracks you can because the person/people before you may end up playing the same tracks you had planned, no one wants to hear the same tracks twice that said, it doesn't hurt to have a a set planned out, but if someone does play the tracks you had lined up, have some backups

thats fucking dope as, i do like the white finish for the top, and the blue lights in the power switch, that guy could make a killing remaking the 1200's

The art of DJing has been around a long time, from the early days of Hip Hop that led to the modern scratch DJ to Larry Levan, who was one of the first DJs to put two records together seamlessly in a nightclub, creating a true dance floor journey. A lot has changed in the technology and gear used by DJs in EDM culture. We may no longer use the Technics 1200‘s as the industry standard, but the fundamentals of being a great DJ have not changed that much. Hopefully these tips and bits of advice will help you develop your craft and stand apart from the current crop of busters pretending to know what it means to be a DJ. There is nothing worse than seeing a DJ who has a pair of headphones and never uses them or a dude that just plays the hits. If you could be replaced by a playlist … well, you just might be. LEARN HOW TO MIX I don’t mean beat match for 8 bars and slam two tracks together, or use a sync button to hammer your way through two tracks. If this is what you think being a DJ is, you fucking suck. Mixing is about layering two or three tracks together in a way that creates not only a seamless flow but a new piece of music in the process. When you are thinking about your set, think about matching bass lines and layering percussion together that builds up the vibe or keeps up the energy. You can always used Mixed In Key to help you out with this, but it’s always best to learn to do this by ear, not by numbers. When you get really familiar with your tunes you can really start to get deep and match phrases/vocals, nothing is more incredible than watching a DJ do a 32 bar mix with two songs that lay over one another perfectly. EQ’S AND FILTERS There is nothing worse than a newbie DJ that does not know how to properly work the EQ’s and/or throws in filters over every track. These tools are like cologne- a little dab will get you noticed and too much will get you put in the penalty box. When you are dropping in the EQ’s to create tension it’s a good idea to go with it for that section of the track. It adds a bit of extra spice to the song and can whip the crowd up into even more of a frenzy. DO NOT just randomly start twisting the knobs in the middle of a track because you feel the need to do something. As far as filters go, same thing, pepper them in to the parts of the tracks that creating tension like snare roles or break downs to give it an extra kick. PRESENCE BEHIND THE DECKS There are two extremes here that really seem to dominate the DJ booths these days. First is the over animated, running around the stage, jumping up and down, heart sign, two fists in the air guys. Second there is the guy who looks like he is on methadone and just stares at his laptop or CDJs the entire time. Be the guy in between those two guys, be animated and interact with the crowd but also do your job as a DJ and mix those tracks to perfection. Do it flawlessly. Stay away from the cliches like the heart sign, pyramids and double fists in the air… It’s great to be fired up, just don’t look like an 18 year old girl at her first rave on drugs. To all the guys throwing up the heart sign, that’s cute, but all the other DJs are completely making fun of your corny ass. THE MUSIC YOU PLAY I really only have one piece of advice for this, play the music that you really love to play and mix it well. If you like to play super commercial house and it makes you happy, then play it. Don’t play the hits just because they are charting on Beatport, or have tons of plays on SoundCloud, half the time that shit is jacked anyway and the plays/rankings are faked/bought. Too many times I have seen hyped up DJs or producers who literally just play the hits and don’t take the time to mix it or create a set that is unique. News flash, if you are just going to play hits we could replace you with an iTunes playlist… and you fucking suck. YOUR CONDUCT If you are DJing at a club/festival/loft party and getting paid to do so, you are a professional and should behave like one. Nothing will end a DJ’s career faster than getting too messed up at gigs, you just can’t do your job properly and you will always fuck up. Be cool to people and polite, even when you want to pour your drink on the girl that just made a request, just smile and nod, they eventually go away. If you get a reputation as partier/drunkard/asshole no one will want to deal with you and you will watch your bookings disappear as fast as they came about, that and other DJs will start to hate on you and spread bad juju. Last fall, Ralph Lauren launched their Denim & Supply campaign featuring Avicii as their nubile EDM culture brand ambassador. A calendar year has passed since, and a lot has changed; “Wake Me Up” is the new “Levels,” the Glee Cast is in college, and Bob Filner’s laundry list has experienced exponential growth. Who knew that Avicii would successfully pioneer the unification of EDM and haute couture? Not, I sir. Not, I. Electronic music and fashion pair seamlessly well, like peanut butter and jelly, or sharks and tornados, or whiskey and more whiskey. To keep with tradition, the ultra-chic clothing company has enlisted the talented Avicii for their 2013 collection. Avicii has also launched his new music video for “Wake Me Up” featuring items from the fall clothing line. Synergy, bro, synergy… The collection is a mixture of Americana, Rock n’ Roll, and a casual coolness that only a few designers can successful pull off. And Avicii may not be America’s Next Top Model, but he serves up a mean “Blue Steel” and some Tyra-fierce poses (snap, snap). Here are our favorite Denim & Supply looks for the fall season. EDM culture’s longest-running gathering, Mysteryland, is making its US debut in 2014 in Bethel Woods, the site of the legendary 1969 Woodstock festival. The move marks an historic moment for organizer ID&T, the corporation behind high-profile festivals such as Sensation, Tomorrowland, TomorrowWorld and Q-dance. This will be the first time a multi-day festival is hosted at the iconic Bethel Woods site in upstate New York. Forty-five years after the legendary Woodstock festival, the site will host Mysteryland during Memorial Day weekend from May 23 through May 26, 2014. Promoters from all over the world have been trying for decades to convince the owners of the Bethel Woods site to host large-scale festivals in this special spot. After a year of talks, ID&T has finally won approval for the first US edition of Mysteryland, which is also held annually in the Netherlands and Chile. Darlene Fedun, CEO of Bethel Woods Center for the Arts states “We chose ID&T’s Mysteryland brand as the first modern era festival on the hallowed grounds for its belief in many of the same principles as our own organization. Creativity, unity, social responsibility and a focus on the “experience” of the guest. The festival offers its guests a creative journey, combining music with theatre, movies, interactive installation art, street performers and spectacular shows at bizarre decorated stages. The musical offerings are also all about discovery. In addition to legends from the international dance scene, the festival provides a stage for new and local talents: the next generation. Mysteryland has been a leading pioneer on the dance festival scene in Europe and the US since 1993 and has inspired the famous Tomorrowland festival, which emerged from the key values of the Mysteryland festival. Furthermore Mysteryland has also been a major catalyst for the electronic music revolution since the early 1990s. The first US edition of Mysteryland at this iconic location will be all about quality. The multi-day festival will be a very exclusive gathering, with only 20,000 tickets available. Drum & Bass took a hearbreaking fall last year when Rob Swire announced that Pendulum was “on hiatus.” Pendulum was without a doubt a living legend in the Drum & Bass world, a group who truley mastered the art of their sound. The composition of their uniquly formed sound was built off of Swire & McGrillen’s metal band background (Xygen), and the Neruofunk sub-genre influence of classic undergound D&B. vault, Pendulum’s first release in 2003 on the Kingz of ROllers EP Vol.3 jumpstarted their career into the debut album, Hold Your Colour. The album peaked at #16 on the UK Album Chart, and sold over 225,000 copies in the UK alone. Pendulum was here to stay. In 2008, In Silico was released and surprised us all with a delightfully dark sounds of Rock. The track “Propane Nightmares” skyrocketed the group to the mainstream world of EDM, where they entertained the minds and souls of festival attendees and bassheads in Europe and North America. Two years later, Immersion was released with three singles that are identifiable today as staples in the Drum & Bass genre. Watercolour, Witchcraft, and The Island were all chart topping tracks, and can still be found streaming through your pandora, slacker, and internet radio channels today. So why did the unstopabble group split? Well, for Knife Party. Originally a side project, Knife Party became an overnight success. In 2011, Swire and McGrillen announced that this new sound is not directly related to Pendulum or the sounds that built it. The focus was to be on Electo-House, Dubstep, and other club-genres. Knife Party’s Rage Valley released in May 2012. The duo has been producing, DJing, and traveling as Knife Party non-stop and does not plan to slow down anytime soon. Source: magneticmag.com
