Chicago house pioneer Frankie Knuckles dies aged 59
OxyKon replied to OxyKon's topic in DJ Headquarters
yeah, i saw this article yesterday morning but didn't want to post it until it was confirmed cause of april fools on that side of the world at the time -
Last month, the internets were abuzz with talk that Madeon had called Nicky Romero out for spending money on a ghost producer. Whether or not Madeon was tweeting in direct reference to Romero remains to be seen (the tweet has since been taken down), but regardless, Romero is seen coming out pretty strong against the practice in a recent interview with fuse.tv. Ghost producing, in its crudest form, is hiring somebody to create a track and then passing it off as your own work. In the interview Romero states: What I really don’t like and what I really don’t respect and support is guys that go over email to producers and say, ‘Hey, I wanna have a record and it must sound like this’ and they are not involved at all. There are a lot of DJs that do that… There are rich dads in this world that just pay for their sons and pay producers tons of money to have music out there and make them a big artist. But an artist is created by creativity and originality and discipline. It is not created by money.” You can view the entire interview here Source: magneticmag.com

In a single sentence, 5 Magazine brought unprecedented sadness to the dance music community. The Chicago-based dance mag wrote earlier this evening that Frankie Knuckles, the Chicago legend and Godfather of House music, had passed away at the age of 59. The story named no sources, but soon artists close to Knuckles took to social media to confirm it as true. Paul Johnson took the news to Facebook, DJ Deeon expressed condolences on Instagram and David Morales made a statement on Twitter, sparking the outpouring of mourning from DJs and dance fans alike. Though there has yet to be an official statement, 5 Magazine has defended its story via Twitter, naming The Warehouse owner Robert Williams as a source. Knuckles, born in the Bronx in 1955, was a vital figure in developing house music in Chicago during the 1980s, having become resident DJ at The Warehouse, the venue responsible for the term House music. In 2005, Frankie was inducted into the Dance Music Hall of Fame alongside leaders like John “Jellybean” Benitez, Francois Kevorkian and Larry Levan. The dance music community awaits more details. UPDATE: The Chicago Tribune has confirmed the passing of Frankie Knuckles. Source: dancingastronaut.com

Deadmau5 logo faces trademark investigation from Disney
OxyKon replied to OxyKon's topic in DJ Headquarters
Yeah I'm also surprised that this has taken it's time to pop it's head, should've happened years ago -
Don’t be fooled by the date – as lighthearted as the headline reads, a curious impending case between two favorite mice has surfaced today. Disney has publicly announced plans to investigate into Deadmau5‘s recently filed trademark registration. Dance music fans have long recognized Joel Zimmerman’s cartoon-like mouse caricature as a signature logo of the producer and his brand, but Disney has taken note of the striking similarities between the Mau5′s design and the likeness of their own Mickey head and requested and received a 90 day investigation period to claim and file notice of opposition. The follow image is Deadmau5′s attempted registration, which, if approved, would cover “electrical and scientific apparatus, vehicles (specifically BMX bikes), paper goods, leather goods, toys and sporting goods, staple foods (like coffee), light beverages and entertainment services.” Compared with Disney’s celebrated figurehead: Disney is currently investigating the trademark request and will release details soon. A new Pioneer vinyl turntable was exhibited at music trade show Musikmesse 2014 a couple weeks back, exciting wax purists across the globe with what looks like a worthy replacement for the discontinued Technics 1210. With the prospect of a new turntable entering the market, we take a look at some of the decks that have helped shaped dance music history. From the vintage record spinners of the 1970s to the hi-tech glory of the present day, here's some of the most influential equipment ever to have been released. Thorens TD-125 MKII Spawned by renowned Swiss manufacturer Thorens, this vintage piece is firmly locked into New York folklore. Although heavily overlooked nowadays, the TD-125 MKII was a firm favourite of legendary DJ Larry Levan during his residency at the Paradise Garage, while another legend in the game, Tony Humphries, has also spun a few records on this in his time. Garrard SP25 First released in 1965, the Garrard was a club staple in the United Kingdom during the pre-varispeed era of the 60s and part of the 70s. Pioneering British DJ Greg Wilson was one of many DJs to use this before the Technics SL-1200s came along and changed the path of club music forever. Technics SL-1200 It's safe to say that the Technics SL-1200 changed the DJing game entirely. Released in 1972 by Matsushita (now re-branded as Panasonic), the 1200 quickly became an established piece of kit for club DJs thanks to its high torque motor system before 1979's MKII version later became synonymous with hip hop DJs' knack of scratching. Technics SL-1210 Although very similar to the 1200, albeit with a matte black finish, the 1210 arrived with a few circuitry updates. Sadly, Panasonic announced in 2010 that the Technics would be taken off the market due to "the accelerating transformation of the entire audio market from analogue to digital." Vestax PDX-2000 Japanese company Vestax launched its turntables in the late 90s, placing its products in direct competition with the Technics range. The PDX-2000, a must-have for any scratch DJ, came close to overtaking the 1210 but the long-established Technics proved too popular and stayed as the industry number one. Stanton STR8.150 Born in the 00s following the discontinuation of Technics, this straight tone arm (hence the 'STR8' moniker) turntable arrived with the self-professed "world's strongest torque motor". A back-to-basics steel construction, equipped with key correction, 50 pitch adjustments and digital output, this Stanton model certainly stepped into Technics' shoes with pride. Pioneer CDJ-1000 A somewhat groundbreaking invention, the CDJ-1000 is heralded as the first CD player to accurately emulate the attributes of vinyl turntables. Debuting on shelves in 2001, consumers were wowed by the concept of it supporting playback from CD, CD-R and CD-RW. MK2 and MK3 versions followed in 2003 and 2006 before the range was discontinued in 2009. Pioneer CDJ-2000 Nexus Classed as one of the most revolutionary pieces of DJ gear, the Nexus arrived as the follow-up to the CDJ-2000 when it was discontinued in 2012. Stacked with a seemingly endless list of features, including internal Rekordbox software, the ability to load music via USB and Wi-Fi (the first DJ player in the world to do so) and Pioneer's best Master Tempo ever, it's a class act for all digital age DJs. Canadian producer Deadmau5 took the stage to replace Avicii for Saturday’s closing set at Miami’s Ultra Music Festival and, true to form, the progressive-house DJ approached his set with a little bit of trademark humour, poking fun at fellow producers Martin Garrix and his hospitalised colleague Avicii. The fun began when Deadmau5 took to Twitter before his set to let his fans know exactly how he felt about 17-year-old Garrix’s debut. “Lemme know if Garrix plays Animals… and the set contains at LEAST 1 countdown from 10. Thanks,” he wrote to his followers about the breakthrough Dutch DJ and his hit track. Deadmau5 then incited a even more intrigue, giving fans a little insight into his preparation for the impeding set. “I don’t even know what to play. I’ll figure it out I guess,” he wrote. Adding, “I seriously don’t have Levels on here, otherwise I would.” “Throwing some random bullshit together for the set… holy shit I’m such a dick, this is gunna be awesome,” he concluded, adding “I’m an evil genius”, before hitting the stage for an epic, last-minute set. The tongue-in-cheek moments of the performance came when Deadmau5 mashed-up Garrix’s anthem Animals with Old MacDonald Had A Farm. Right after this, Mau5 played a mash-up of his own track Ghost N Stuff and one of Avicii’s signature anthems Levels. While his intentions in doing so were not entirely clear, fellow EDM heavyweight Tiesto questioned whether the tribute track was intended as a slight to Avicii, who is recovering in hospital with gall bladder issues. “Oh wait, was @deadmau5 being sarcastic when he played @Avicii ? That’s pretty sad taking the piss of someone who’s in the hospital,” tweeted Tiesto. “How does one play a track sarcastically?,” replied the sardonic Deadmau5. “Am I supposed to sneer while hitting the sync button? Or is that ironic?” Source: musicfeeds.com.au

After Avicii cancelled his own Avicii Hotel set and then Ultra performance for medical reasons, rumors swirled as to what caused the super star’s hospitalization. Thanks to Twitter, the world now knows. In a series of tweets, Tim Bergling announced that stomach pains sent him to the hospital upon arrival in Miami, and back again Thursday night. The DJ will have gall bladder surgery tomorrow, preventing him from performing at Ultra, but he assured fans it was a routine procedure and he fully expected to recover in time for his US True Tour. Though he and the tricks that were guaranteed to be up his sleeve will be sorely missed, Ultra attendees have no less than deadmau5 to look forward to as his replacement. Source: dancingastronaut.com

One thing that always stays consistent within each passing year of the dance music craze is Kaskade‘s generous willingness to share his festival sets with fans. Each year he provides those who cannot make the trip down to the live festival action the chance to experience his emotionally uplifting progressive sets.
