ADJF Beatport 'Top 10 House (June)' Mix Competition
dim replied to Cupe's topic in Competitions, Battles & Collabs
I wont have time to set up my whole rig b4 end of june now so I've bashed through this on my hercules steel and traktor pro. Those nudge buttons are a pain in the arse. edit: having listened back i think you can tell i'm rushing thru the more commercial tunes to get to the deeper house. No musical attention given to harmony just dropping shit on breaks and hoping it will sound ok, it didnt haha. like it from about 7.52 tho. Jim adjf jam hercules steel and traktor by djim I couldnt resist adding the last tune. His name is Richard Cheese and he's a legend. -
gandy you are becoming more and more like your namesake gandhi mate. You dont have to see it as acceptance against your better judgement and it isnt being a doormat and letting people walk all over you... it is tolerance. Let everyone do it their own way and let the listener choose who they listen to.
-
^ that's right. dj is generally so busy djing that he/she wont hear the mix as precisely as when they listen back while doing nothing else. Plus live mixin follows the vibe of the crowd so random cheers and stuff happening can add atmosphere that means a shit mix works coz everyone was busy checking something else in the place... but when you listen back to it you think it's rubbish even tho everyone loved it at the time.
-
cheers boss, Did you add one under the name m? looked like the cut of your jib sir?
-
^ haha, i just noticed the article is 2 yrs old. left my own thoughts for the prick anyway.
-
or shoving up a trolls' arse perhaps djaz? haha, jst jks mate.
-
yer man, I guess he isnt a DJ. I mean LTJ BUKEM a Pioneer? Of drum n bass yes but de las soul use cdjs to do their live show now (inc scratching) and utah saints, stanton warriors, and many others use timecode with macs or bridge. Is his orignal post on a forum or anywhere where real people can leave feedback? If so I bet he's already been put in his place about a thousand times.
-
^ yes mate, good on you, i cant take them. too much mic work for me to do the games and shit. +rep tho you're onto a winner and i'm jealous.
-
^BOLLOCKS. he doesnt even mention DVS so how knowledgeable is the kent anyway. He prob sees a mac and thinks the dj is miming when he's using timecode vinyl. ^^what karma said. also consider this: Why does one person use a tone of writing that sounds so important? 1)coz he doesnt listen to anyone elses POV and thus concludes he's the cleverest WHALE in the world. 2)coz he wants to get more forum posts and hype surrounding him by commenting on a contentious issue in a sensational way. Media scum. -the author is one man with his own ideas and possibly a peer group who agree with him. The rest of the planet will continue to make up their own minds as usual. see sig.

^lovin cappsss tale. same thing you mentioned on the other thread rite? lurk6r: i f you do those party games and things you are a much much much braver man than me. I run a mile... it only takes one spoilt brat to lose the game they wanted to win and their crying to mummy and guess who looks a WHALE for the rest of the night. Kids entertainer aint in the dj job description to me. but if you can do it: big up, loads of work in that if you can do both.

^spot on ravni.

ooopps, my bad mate, soz. still here coz waitin for duracell to post pics of his prod teams stages.. keep bumping it.
-
haha no doubt. I still do that when I listen back to my mixes too.
-
could give better feedback if you record any attempt and let us hear how you're going wrong TBH. might not make you feel good letting people hear your mess but it may make you better at it in the long run.
-
definition and history... i feel educated and wiser, ta.
-
^ cheers gandy. source you are a bona fide genius + rep mate.
-

kik? i dont know that one, pls explain?

mate i cant believe that makes sense, i was off my box when i wrote that. prob did it on autopilot. ...as i say i've taught hundreds of folk how to do it but they're always there next to me so I can see exactly what they're doing and how it's sounding. I guess the most important thing is: as soon as it sounds confusing stop the one you are trying t bring in, cue it and restart it on the one. That way you know at least the 1st beat was in line and so you can judge the next few beats in confidence not confusion. anyway good luck man.
-
murder dat bloodclot. bury him under the dancefloor with whichever prick gave him the job, maybe in their next lives they'll have more riddim. or just keep going until you take his job away.

ok then: 1) have a track (tune 1) you know well playing. 2) cue the next track (tune 2) so it's going to start from a 1st beat, make sure this track has a long intro of just beats. 3)drop the pitch fader (on tune 2) real low so you can pretty much guarantee it is slower than tune 1. 4) count in tune 2 and start it on the first beat of a bar on tune 1 so you know the two first beats of the bar were simultaneous. 5) listen very carefully to that first bar of tune 2. was the first beat of the next bar before or after the first beat of the next bar on tune 1? 6) do not let tune 2 play longer than the one bar. 7) re cue tune 2 and try again. If you are sure the first beat of the second bar of tune 1 is coming before the 1st beat of the second bar of tune 2 then you know tune 2 is too slow. speed it up a little. 9) repeat steps 4 - 7. 10) only play the first bar of tune 2 everytime but keep going trying really hard just to concentrate if that first beat of the second bar of tune 2 is before or after the first beat of the second bar on tune 1. 11)As the tunes get closer in speed you will not notice any problems after only 1 bar of playing and they will sound matched, but slight differences in speed will become clear after more repetitions of the bars. This means as you get closer you'll have to leave them playing together longer to have a chance to hear if they slip or not. At this point you are fine tuning and may be able to use nudge technique to get them to "sit" together. 12) If none of this helps maybe wait until i finally get round to recording and posting my own beatmatching tutorial vids and watch that. I have not failed yet to teach beatmatching but this is the first time I've done it without being able to see what you are doing so this a learning curve for me too mate.

^ thats brilliant hobz, a natural progression mate... + rep. My sat night was much better than my friday. It was the under 18s festival where 5000 kids can do all kinds of things plus there is a main stage with big bands... at the event i judge the area dj competition, host a marquee where kids can try out djing then move to a dif marquee to do a two hour silent disco. Two sets of dex, two channels and the headphones have a switch so the dancers can choose which dj they listen to, me and 3 of my best students playing heavy bass, dubstep, chart remixes and stuff for the under 18s. See vid below, i tried to hold the headphones to my phone so you could hear it but didnt work:
