  1. i got asked a few years back, turns out each dancer has their own tune they like to dance to, and there's a lot of mic work doing intros etc... so in essence you dont pick the music, you dont play to the crowd, you dont mix except if you want to in between acts, and you do have to do crap mic work, and sound you like mean it. plus even if you hate it your girl wont believe you. and all the regular pervs will keep asking if you can help them get to know the girls... the view gotta be very good, and the money even better. not really a job for dj, IMO
  2. oho, double post! just checked ya trax, pretty electronic already eh, nice but not punk, i thought you were a band player not another producer so ignore my question about scratch dj hey?
  3. ez jerry, i aint local but am online, always happy to big up dif genres. you ever had a scratch dj working with you're punk stuff? works well imo
  4. summary of above (someone tell me if i'm out of line please)= -if you dont need the warp function on take it off. -if you do need the warp on be sure and choose the best sounding of the 6 warp styles ableton can apply. -render/export audio in ableton as a 44.1khz/ 32 bit wav. so that when playing in ableton it sounds best. -but expect any cd buring software to reduce your 32 bit wav to a 16bit wav for the cd. -and know that this (16 bit) is still exactly equal to the quality you get on manufactured CDs in the shops. if it still sounds dodgy in any way you better check the levels you were recording it at, or the quality of the original tracks. good luck

thats what i'm talking about, top stuff eggsell, plus rep when the 15 minutes of fame has passed for the last guy!
  6. true. but if it doesnt have to be warped no warping is best: the following is from the ableton manual page 522, chapter 31 see point 4 especially: 31.4 Tips for Achieving Optimal Sound Quality in Live For users looking to achieve optimal audio quality in Live, we have provided a list of recommended practices and program settings. 1) Decide which sample rate to use for a project prior to beginning work, rather than changing the sample rate while working on the project. 2) Record audio into Live using high-quality hardware components (audio interface, cables, etc.) and at the highest sample rate and bit depth your interface and computer will support. 3) Avoid using samples that are at different sample rates within the same project. If you want to work with such files, we recommend that you first convert them to the sample rate set for your audio interface in an offline application that is optimized for this task. 4) For all audio clips, disable both the Warp and Fade options in the Clip View. 5) Do not adjust the Transpose and Detune controls for any clips. 6) Always render at 32-bit and at the sample rate set for your audio interface. If you need audio files at a different sample rate and/or bit depth, we recommend that you convert your rendered files in an offline application that is optimized for these tasks, rather than in Live. Please note that these practices, while ensuring optimal audio quality, disable some of Live’s functionality in particular, stretching and synchronization. ----------------------------------------------------
  7. ez, was gonna compare ya to josh wink but you did that ya self already... big up the old skool acid sound
  8. worth noting in case you dont know: if you have the warp function on in ableton it totally screws your sound quality and results in that very recognisable wobble that ableton applies to everything when it does it's time-warping shit. If yours is a set and the tweaking didnt require timewarping then turn warp off. You can resample the audio to a new track (also with warp off) and any volume/ edits/effects you've tweaked will be added to the new .wav and you 'll then get a clear .wav at whatever settings you feel best, i'd listen to CBG about that if i were you. Another option is: If you've recorded in traktor you can play the whole set back in on one of the traktor dex and do any tweaking by overdubbing any mistakes using the other dex in traktor...

i dj, and teach dj skills in schools, prisons and for kids with learning issues and the like. there's a whole explantion on the thread about work/monies somewhere on here. i know there's no point landing in another country expecting to get gigs str8 away without a rep so figure i'll have to concentrate on the teaching side of my business 1st. That's why I'm trying to find out if oz govt supplies funding for those sort of activities down under...any contacts etc well appreciated. the cuts are biting big time here now. p.s. you may want to repost a new topic somewhere else regarding the best way to hook your d2 to ableton and your new sounds. the "wav-midi" title is a bit misleading about what you are really wanting to do and there are many more headz here that could give serious tips... list the gear you already have and the style of music you aim to make then ask how best to get it all working maybe?
  10. haha, once upon a time b4 they were big they tried to get in a club i was running with the line "do you know who we are?" i didnt, so i told 'em to fuk off. good band, bad conversationalists.
  11. dr octagon "i'm destructive" bill withers "use me" archie bell "the tighten up" rolling stones "satisfaction" ian dury "spasticus artisticus" bob marley "could you be loved" the specials "too much too young" fly the flag mate, not enough djs still approach things this way but it's where it all started. good luck.

seriously? wav to midi like that...? you tried it? i've got 8.2 how do i go about that?

fair nuff wazza, i thought the lad had ableton already but also i just checked what the d2 was, they're discontinued in uk but i do remember them... quite a nice toy really, if you like roland sounds... but your right, pointless with ableton.
  14. good posts here but it's worth mentioning: there is less difference between all the mp3, aac formats etc if they are played directly from software, i.e. traktor/serrato etc. if you are burning them to cds and playing them they will suffer much more as this is converting an mp3 back to .wav .wav is the way fwd, but it's very true: most punters wont notice the difference. If you are playing mp3/aac and are feeling something lacking you can up your gain (sometimes called trim), or use your eq to boost the bass and treble and cut out some of the mid. It wont restore the original but it may help you craft your own overall "sound." I use any bit rate anytime coz you never know what will work until you've tried it. If it isnt working for the crowd I change it, simples.

urr i may be wrong but if you've got a laptop with ableton on and you want to use the d2 as your triggering device all you need is that midi to usb convertor you mentioned at beginning, but converting midi from d2 to usb, not wav to midi. A midi keyboard/audio interface would sort it right out? I used to use a m-audio ozone, not usre what is available now but you plug your midi in it, and it via usb to your laptop. much cheaper and simpler than an sp404 if you've already got the laptop? BTW: cheers for the news about melbourne, i've lived in queensland b4 and know the people are righteous, need to be sure i can earn down there tho as have 2 bin lids now. what do you do for bucks?
  16. ya know wot, the kids just started hols and i've a bit of time on my hands. why not post links to the two tunes in a usable format and let me rec a few egs for ya? i could do with something to do that doesnt involve wedding music (billie jean and rihanna/beyonce).... use soundcloud, or dropbox preferably?

nah man, i dont fb, well sometimes i do but only in those dark days of winter in the uk... considering your set up my advice ould be: if the d2 has space for audio put the loops etc str8 in there, if not keep them on the laptop in ableton and use the d2 as a midi triggering device? I used to use an old m-audio ozone audio interface with midi to get my akai mpc to talk to ableton, it worked well. Sold the akai in the end and now just use ableton with the ozone. me and fam are seriously considering emmigrating, any advice mate?
  18. hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahhahahahhahahahahahah proper fuckin old skool star! +rep otha alternatives (and i didnt listen to the otha examples yet): use an accapella over the first tune, let it play on its own in between and brign in the second tune. with keylock on (cd/digital only) no one will notice the change in tempo as you rematch the accapella to the new tune. CD/digital only: loop the end of the track, slowly reduce the size of the loop manually from the out point, as it gets mad bz start fuckin with the pitch fader to generate a new melody (max, min and zero point are about a semitone apart on cdjs). bring in the next track but maintain the melody you're playing with the pitch fader over the new tracks intro beats, cut your melody when the new tune drops. cd/digital only: loop the end of the track (preferably just beats, no melody) as a 4 beat loop, increase the pitch to whatever the next tune requires and mix it in like that, live bands fuck with tempo like this all the time, djs are often scared to try but it can work, depends heavily on how fast you are and which tunes of course. use a brake/wind down end to the dubstep, get everyones attention as they wonder if the night is over or the dex are broke: then drop new tune from a recognisable break/drop and give everyone the pundaddy 4 finger pose (wolf mask optional).
  19. ok steady, good post hobberz so you get proper four deck control. those extra samplers and loop recorder look nice, plus tape delay is well overdue. The "plug n play" element of the external soundcard looks great, esp if it really is easy to switch djs (and laptops) mid gig. IMO: i'm not really bothered about waveforms as hate looking at the screen, and simplifying sync even more is only going to encourage more newbies to take the path to the dark side. just thinking out loud but my verdict: mine aint broke, it dont need fixing... yet.
  20. yeah, whats the crack with version 2? i have full traktor scratch pro for now, is an upgrade worth it?
  21. Top shizzle that bro. I agree with source raver about the rca to minijack, plus I always carry duct tape so I can get all cables taped up and out the way. If you dont some idiot will trip over, spill their drink on your dex and it's game over, or they pull a speaker down on top of themselves and sue you for liability. speaking of which: all uk DJs have to have their own personal liability insurance if they are bringing any kit into a venue, and all units need a portable electrical appliance test certificate do you have similar over there?

ez johnnyboy. why dont you want to keep the sounds on your laptop? The d2 should work as the triggering device if you have some software on the laptop that is midi compatible and the midi to usb convertor. That way you keep the sounds you have? What software did you use to make the loops etc? p.s. where you from and where you now?
  23. numark also has the rotating led start 2 mins in for it yep, thats why it was my 1st choice, plus pioneer will shutdown if pc crashes, numark works as standalone mixer, also i've just discovered the pioneers are not compatible with 64 bit laptops.... so numark back in the number 1 slot, and £100 cheaper in uk.

    Wav-Midi

For your sake i hope someone proves me wrong on this but as far as i know a wav cannot become midi. Midi signals can be used to trigger wav sounds but you'd still need the wav audio somewhere, either in the groovebox to act as sample (if it does that) or in some other midi controlled sampler (eg your laptop if the software is compatible). ready to look dumb when someone posts about a new tech... but it's all witchcraft and sorcery to me.
