  1. prob not really d'n'b, more a precursor to the scene, but i'm old so it's old skool 1st:
  2. a tip for lifting i learnt from roadies, it's a bit weird but it worx: stick a bit of duct or gaffa tape from the top of your arse to the small of your back if you try and bend you're gonna feel it start to pull out hair long before you get to straining your back in a bad lift once you've learnt how to lift properly you can stop again... i know it's odd but it's a good way of teaching yourself out of a bad habit.
  3. maybe... but lets not forget govt taxes: at point of purchase of raw materials, on wages of employees, and on the sale in the retail shop. then there is all the advertising, namm exhibitions and brown nosing pioneer reps need to do to stay industry standard, also all the money they lose when they get it wrong by making thousands of units which no one wants like the cdj 500 which must still be sitting in warehouses around the world. it's a fucked up and very wasteful system and i bet even they cant calculate how much they really make from any one unit sale but what are we gonna do? we get inspired by new toys and if they didnt make enough money to risk spending time on research we might all still be on belt drive wind up gramophones!!
  4. ez no i didnt notice any delay on the system I was playing on, done it 3 times now with the same crew and found it ok. I guess the audio path is similar really when you thing about it: normal dj goes from dex to mixer on stage down some loom cable to a soundesk and outboard gear (compressors/limiter) then definitely to amps then finally to speakers. silent dj goes from dex to mixer on stage down some loom cable to possibly a soundesk and outboard gear (compressors/limiter) then to trasnmitter and headphones. so although there is a lot of opportunity for delay as long as the transmitter is as quick as the amp there is no noticable difference. you did say "surround sound processor" tho: home hifi is called home hifi for a reason mate.
  5. so the mark up is used to cover the risks of gamblers? doesnt that mean we are paying so they have a safety net in case they release products that are shit lol? I'm not having a go, and I do get it... a lot of the mark up is used by companies in research too, especially electronics companies.
  6. aye, god knows why the youtube link says dubstep on it tho ey?
  7. hey sol i just thought, in case you havent done this already... take all the kit you are going to use at this gig apart, pack it in bags, pack it in the car, drive round the block then unpack it and set it all up again. Did everything fit in the bags? Did you have everything you needed? did everything work again? how long did it take you? practising mixing is well and good but if you're mobile you've also got to be able to set your gear up in a reasonable amount of time without too much soundchecking/troubleshooting... In a nutshell: it may sound wierd but it's worth practising the load in and set up too.
  8. thats the ticket: especially: "Everytime you have to move the pitch control (while monitoring through the headphones) go back to the cue you set on the first beat " once you get better at it you wont need to go back everytime you adjust the pitch, but when learning it is by far the best way to see how much effect your change in pitch has made to the beatmatching. that cue on the 1st beat is your point of reference. always set it for every beat match, even if you wont actually start the song from there in your mix. and when you want things to get more musical set that cue on the first beat of a phrase (which will be the first beat of a bar in most cases too)
  9. hey source, does that work 4 u? I do the same but instead of plugging extra cans into my mixers' master out i get a pair of the wireless ones the punters are using, that way i know exactly what level they are listening at. It also means if they are having problems with reception from the wireless transmitters i know about it and can tell the team running the transmission.
  10. haha, bet you forget to add the second after the 15 minutes wait... cheers tho.
  11. bit more up to date than mantronix.
  12. +rep for that, that single piece of advice is probably some of the best you will get, so true infact that i carry around a usb full of my latest tracks on usb on my car/house keyring because you never know when you will get asked to jump on Now i'm no rep whore but wtf?
  13. ^cheers steve, they dont police it much here either but i've seen big stings at large events like festivals where licensing is tricky anyway. Oh and T.V. and Radio like the BBC always check too. you suddenly come out of the cold mate? you're talking a lot of sense.

  15. ^ props mate, good skillz
  16. ^ aye, tis true here. But from a shopfloor POV the rule of thumb was a percent per sale not per unit. Worth knowing both facts for anyone shoppping though. also pioneer are being v tight here too: the only shop in uk willing to unpack the new pioneer controllers for demo is HTFR in birmingham. Everyone else is saying the profit margins are too small for them to risk having to sell one ex-demo. perhaps a new thread on tips when buying gear? is there one already?
  17. dave dobyn, the seekers, i had to go to youtube didnt i. That shit is worse than sols winrar link! i'm gonna have to spend about an hour in solitary listening to ennio morricone soundtracks just to feel the world of music is a reasonable place again. then i think i'll do the 1st 2 pixies albums. then i may be able to hear a processed beat again. Educated by kents lol!
  18. great choon, skillz
  19. potted career history - 1) hang out with the scene (I've been partying with this crew of DJs and musicians since we were all 16, i'm 37 now.) 2) get to know the guys (We all met because I had an idea for my own club night on wednesdays in leeds. we'd do a kind of DJ vs Band hip hop/acid jazz/ trip hop jam (eggs will prob recognise guru's jazzmatazz as a big inspiration behind this). We would never have got a sat night for something so specific but uni towns supply mid week punters... since then we've all done functions, club nights, recording studios, venues, teaching, workshops, festivals etc... sometimes together, sometimes alone... anything involving music and money that helps build the rep basically) 3) be ready and able to play tunes whenever you are asked or when no one else will, or can. Be professional... but be sure to have fun.
  20. keep us in touch mate, there's many ways a set up can crackle, and many ways of reducing the hiss. good luck
  21. soz man, just noticed you said second hand rite at the start of this.
  22. ^ ha ha, educate me!
  23. 1st things 1st: turn down your speakers until you source the problem, you may damage your speaker cones if not. Next: Does the crackle happen as you move faders/controls on the mixer? If so you need some contact cleaner. If not: try to deduce where crackle is coming from, turn off one deck... can you still hear crackle? it's not that deck that has the problem then. Turn off other deck etc... If you can try borrow a mixer so you can swap them over to see if it's coming from there. Not solved? then i think worse case scenario is some loose copper wire inside the sheath of your audio cables, or where they should attach to solder internally on your dex or mixer. So: Very very carefully try this: with no audio playing but all ready to go and needles on records: very very gently wiggle each cable one at a time to see if it crackles. Wiggle where cable meets deck 1, then where that cable meets mixer, then same for deck 2, and finally master out from mixer and audio into amp/speaker. DO this so gently as this issue is caused by wiggling cables (which happens everytime you set up of course) If crackle appears to result from a specific cable being wiggled then turn off that deck or replace that cable and see if problem fixed. If it's the cables that are internal to your dex you're going to need a service. Other possible options: cables on the cart are loose, mixer needs a contact clean, cables internal on tonearm are loose (but this normally = earth hum not crackle). to be honest there are many things that could cause this and Eggs is also right: it may just be natural vinyl sound, but if it's really loud there may be a fault, and at the end of the day if it's loud enough to mention to us you clearly arent impressed by it. good luck.

Ronan Keating - You say it best followed by: sandstorm - darude skrillex - long drive ratm - killing in the name of? i reckon it's time to get back to the drawing board, or maybe the buffet?
  25. ez sol, i've done silent discos a few times now in uk. basically our licensing law changed which means we can hold loads more mini festivals legally as long as the late night stuff was silent disco. It's a cool scene but cons: as a dj you have to swap your dj monitoring phones for the master output phones to monitor your mix. this is a big pain in the arse so better of practising mixing just in phones if you dont already do this. Although you'll still have to check the master phones to be sure you're not overloading levels. obviously you wont "feel" the bass like you do at a proper gig so no speaker hugging or back massages via dubstep wobbles. pro: when you want to chat a girl or order at the bar: just take the phones off and all is silent so you just talk at normal vol then put cans back on when finished yakking. do whatever it takes to get you in a good "night out" mood then leave the phones off and watch a room full of headz dancing to 3 dif djs, in silence, except occasionally cheering or sing along randomly. I have never seen anything so surreal in my life. regarding getting involved i'd have thought it's be same as ever: hang out with the scene (a lot), get to kow the guys (thats the tricky bit), offer a mix cd, get lucky, be professional, have fun.
