  1. Thanks mate. So I should be basing my music off those kinds of genres and only touching top-40 minimally?
  2. Hi all, Its been a while since I've DJ'ed proper. Most of my time was back in the days of high school. Now as a uni student, I have been asked to play some music for a uni party as an opening set (before the main event). Problem is ... I've never done open before, nor am I fully in touch with the sort of music I should be playing as an opener. I know I need to start off slower (in the 2009 days I would have said start off with R&B and other low BPM) but not much detail on exactly what. Nor am I entirely sure what tracks I have lined up. I have till the 5th to prepare. So my questions are this: 1. How should I tackle this in general? 2. Can you list some tracks I should add to the list? (This is my main problem ATM). The set is going to be 7-8, possibly 7-9. Thanks, Tom
  3. I can. I just have to build the plugin.
  4. HI all, Here is a nice trick I discovered just after christmas. I got a smoke machine for christmas. Unfortunatally, I don't own any real lights. My dad also has a home projector which he never uses. Anyone see where this is going? Im the end I devised a workable system incorperating just the projector, lappy, and smokey machine. I ran virtual DJ in video mode, and used the clipbank to select the different video clips. Obviously, the video drivers were in extended mode. I created the video clips by writing/customising 9 different visualizer plugins in winamp, then using a screen recorder. The other three were just recorded outright. In the end I had a system where I could just click an effect on the lappy, and have it shine into the smoke, creating a laser like effect. Looks very professional! THis one has better music, but worse video. I think I might write a program to automate all these effects. That would be cool.
  5. Audacity has issues with recording high quality bass. I personally tried using the line in- to Audacity at one point, only to find the bass didn't get through. If you record using Virtual Dj Software as 'line in' it records it in full quality. Also use 'Line in' not 'Mic in' I was under the impression that that signal has a bad range.
  6. G'day mate yer electro is the Kizzy nowadays.
  7. Dude I'm 15 too don't let it stop you it's school dances and parties all the way...
  8. gday. Yeh R&B is hard to mix dont worry to much bout that. like to hear some of your mixes if you can post them when you get the chance.
  9. ANYTHING BY FELGUK. Seriously, if you haven't heard him your life is not complete. More specifically; Dance forever - Felguk
  10. Is your midi clock enabled? (if your device supports it) Also make sure that... Yr using low latency audio drivers. Asio are good And your latency settings are as low.
  11. Considering all the help Ive been recieving I think its time to give something back to the community. yu have every right to disaggree with what I say as it is only a guide; im just sharing what ive found as a 15 yr old dj. ##Mixing for 12-18 yr olds; parties, formals, school dances, (not so sure about U18 events) Okay, mixing for this agegroup is actually really straightforward. There are two main relatively effective styles: Mobydisc style (no skill) - Play the top 40 for the last three months in a random fashion. Take requests. Crossfade or run back to back. Im not gonna lie - this style of mixing will keep your crowd moving. But its far too easy and its frankly shit. It just works for this agegroup. But the next style works better... Party style (my fav) - Play a sequence of styles, dropping a top 40 in every 3-8 songs. Beat matching and working the eq is essential. Im sure most of you do this already. Now, to be more specific: Start with R&B/Hip Hop. At the beginning of a dance everyone will be feeling a bit awkward and there won't be much vibe. Play the music that matches that tone. Maybe everyone is already fired up and you can skip this style completely. Anyway, When you think that the floor is ready to move on, then move to the next style. Good tracks that fit this are When I grow up - Pussycat dolls, Temperature - Sean Paul, I made it (by whoever made let it rock), you get the picture... Move to something with more of a beat - Choose tracks with energy. remember the young generations have alot of energy and sugar to burn. Don't play those shit ultra repetive traks that sound like shit and have no energy. Oh, and tracks with alot of bass go down well too. Things like Take over control, Weapon of Choice, Need me to stay, and Deadmau5. These things have alot of bass and alot of energy. Remember to mix well. Younger generations will notice. Beatmatching, and Eq it at a minimun. From then on in its pretty up to you. Just remember to keep the energy up. Rarely your crowd will start running out of steam, then I start playing something with a bit less energy, before quickly switching to a song with a long breakdown and then epic build. (like the original need me to stay). If your out of ideas, I normally run Hiphop-Electro-Harderelectro-Rock (the stuff with alot of guitar, like Animals - Nickelback) -Top 40 (the ones with bass and energy, like Take it off - K$sha). And if you get on the mic don't speak in a single tone. Get into it; "We gotta li''le special somthin commin up for you right here. Im gonna introduce you, to my main man up here, and let him do what he does best" You get the picture... Lastly, be professional. If you have trusses or moving heads, get them out. Strobes, lasers, moonflowers, magic gobos, professional subs, etc. Avoid the birthday party look; with wires going everywhere and no skirt, it ruins the vibe.
  12. Im 15, but for that age group...Anything with a shitload of bass. Anyone heard of Felguk? if not, your life is not complete. Check out Toys, Dance forever, and Do you like Bass 2009. The first two are garranted to fill a floor. In fact, I played the second one (from the beginning of the bassline) a couple of wks ago. Everyone was jumping in like, seconds.
  13. Just bought two brand new 150WRMS speakers for $99. Can't wait for them to arrive...
  14. As a part programmer myself I can tell you this will fail miserably. In the online community, Websites are already out of date something called P2P networks, like nutella, Limewire, or the bittorrent protocol. These are UNBLOCKABLE and will forever continue to run. Sure stupid sites like Pirate bay will go down, but teenage coders with too much time will just Rewrite it to a P2P protocol and then I will be out of there hands.
  15. K thanks. I'll make a demo mix and post it sometime in the near future. Hopefully someone will know someone, but failing that I would email the event as you said. Thanks for your help. Hypoz/Dj NeTTo^^
