  1. Z-13.1: 13 Years of IF? Records, Vol. 1 Various Artists (IF? Records - IF046) It's somehow appropriate that this new compilation from IF? starts off with a brand new track by current Melbourne electronic music enfant terrible, Pat Stormont, and it finishes on a track recorded in 1995 by Zen Paradox - the same city's undoubted techno/electro elder statesman, and a man still amazingly relevant 13 years later. Which is exactly how old IF? Records itself is this year; the baby that was also kick-started - again in Melbourne - in 1995, is now an unwieldy teenager. COMPILATION AVAILABLE NOW ONLINE EXCLUSIVE TO ADDICTECH: http://ifrecords.addictech.com/ BACKGROUND GUFF Over the years, both in the studio and on the live stage, IF? has worked closely with fellow Melburnians Steve Law (Zen Paradox), Voiteck, TR-Storm, Little Nobody, David Haberfeld (Pura/Honeysmack), Artificial, FSOM, Q-Kontrol, Adam Raisbeck (Soulenoid/Sense), Guyver 3, Son Of Zev, Isnod, Nordcore, Blimp, David Thrussell (Snog/Black Lung), Beam Up, DJ Fodder, Kandyman, Amnesia and Mute Freak, and more recently Pat Stormont, Bitch Shift, Cuznmatt, and Enclave. Since relocating to Japan in 2001, we've also taken on board a wad of cool Japanese artists including Captain Funk (Sublime), Toshiyuki Yasuda (Megadolly), Magnet Toy (Trope), Mumeishi (TTAK), Yamaoka (Holzplatten), Dick Drone, Masaya Sasaki, Shin Nishimura, Naotoxin, CHIZQ, and Alone Together. Other international artists involved with IF? during the past 13 big ones have included Si Begg, Tobias Schmidt, Dave Tarrida, Thomas Heckmann, Biochip C, Jammin' Unit, Jason Leach (Subhead), Pnau, Cinnaman, Pocket, Brixton, Tal, Steve Cobby (Fila Brazillia), Dr. Walker, Gene Farris, and Steve Stoll. This time around, the intention was not so much to glorify the label's 13 years (which probably wouldn't have a hope of standing up to such glorification, anyway, given the slack way in which it's been run over the years!), but to continue what we've always tried to do: Showcase our current favourite artists (especially new ones) and musical directions, give diversity a healthy shake, and put the spotlight on our city of birth, Melbourne, along with our adoptive home in Japan - then the rest of the world as well. Cheers to all the artists involved, and for god's sake go check out their own music. These guys seriously rock. TRACK-LIST 1 Pat Stormont - Badly Grounded 2 CHIZQ - Broccoli 3 Jammin' Unit - Where Distinguished People Congregate (2008 Version) 4 DJ Hi-Shock - Dark Pop 5 Jason Leach - Decomposed (Little Nobody remix) 6 TR-Storm - Sulphur Burn 7 Little Nobody - Bonny Voyager (Veronica du Lac remix) 8 Son Of Zev - Flyboy 9 Pat Stormont - You're A 10 Xtronik - Leal 11 Sebastian Bayne - Driving Sideways 12 Little Nobody - Metropolis How? 13 Bitch Shift - Wicked Pitch Of The West (Schlock Tactile remix) 14 Son Of Zev - Missing Parts (Ernst Borgnein und Wolfgang Klein's Last Cadaver mix) 15 Zen Paradox - Tubetribe You can find out more about our aging label over on Discogs here: http://www.discogs.com/label/IF%3F WAYWARD VIDEOCLIP OF ONE BIT ON THIS COMP: Little Nobody - Metropolis How?
  2. So, how're all your plans coming along, anyway?? Any interesting directions? Tokyo continues to be the crazy place I love...
  3. ALONE TOGETHER "THE BEGINNING OF HUMAN" (IF? RECORDS - IF057) We have a knock-out release this week, and it's the debut EP from Japanese cut-up/IDM/broken piano artist, Alone Together. Also known as Yuki Ota, he’s one of the truly innovative (nice) guys here in Tokyo, and even Toshiyuki Yasuda thinks Yuki’s unique and crazy. We consider his stuff wild, scattered, amazing, eccentric, and way way cool—precisely IF?’s cup o’ tea. Some people are already comparing his music with Yasuda, Si Begg, Cassetteboy, Dsico, Kid 606 and Luke Vibert. In other words it's bloody brilliant. Yuki remains deceptively low-key about his occasionally madcap electronic sounds. “I am a broken piano player,” he says on his MySpace site. “I practice Broken Piano theory in Alone Together.” Available exclusively as a digital download through Addictech here (with bonus sample sound stuff): http://ifrecords.addictech.com/ Tracklisting: 1 The Beginning Of Human (4:09) 2 Gold And Twilight (5:39) 3 Bara No Kodoku (8:22) SNEAK PREVIEW VIDEO-CLIP Alone Together "The Beginning Of Human"
  4. Yep, this is ace!
  5. LITTLE NOBODY, feat. ROBO*BRAZILEIRA "ROBOTA" (IF?/Hypnotic Room) Some angles don't change, like the silly Little Nobody infatuation for things robotic. The name of the new Little Nobody EP is 'Robota', and for this one we shanghaied Japanese producer Toshiyuki Yasuda (one of Si Begg's favorite musicians, and who just finished working with Senor Coconut, a.k.a. Atom Heart) into the arrangement, to do gorgeous, robot-style vocoder vocals as Robo*Brazileira. The resultant track (with accompanying remixes by Funk Gadget and Dick Drone) was released today in the digital download terrain via IF? in conjunction with Hypnotic Room, on Beatport, etc, and it's just been remixed by Steve Stoll and Jammin' Unit, so look out for those wild versions early on in 2009. In the meantime, the rather crazy original version here is already getting steady club and radio airplay in Japan and over in the UK, as well as on 2SER in Sydney and 3PBS in Melbourne. More info and feedback from fellow DJ/proddies is online at Hypnotic Room here: http://www.hypnoticroom.com/hroom019.html We also just got a review from Robot Société magazine, which we'll use here for a semblance of propaganda rather than ranting on ourselves: "Welcome to the future, old school robotic style - think Undrground Resistance lobbed back into the soundtrack for Forbidden Planet, tin-pot robots from the '50s let screw-loose within a 21st century tech/electro studio, thereby creating future-funk-breaks never before encountered this side of Isaac Asimov's id. While the humor and the playfulness are oh-so-gleeful, the technical virtuosity and depth of imagination, along with the canny understanding of an open-minded, carousing dance floor, are themselves superb." So, what to expect? Check out Hypnotic Room's site for freebie sample sounds, or head off to the YouTube clip (below) for a dose of Robota zaniness. Stylistically, the Andrez + Toshiyuki mix is barnstorming tech-breaks, while Funk Gadget goes more kitsch-mechanical, his sparser moments colliding with killer, machine-based wind-up frequencies. Dick Drone heads off in grander, more ethereal, clicky and glitchy territory. The downloads are available online at these wunderbar retailers... 6. CONVERSATIONAL DENTURES "SUICIDIO" [iF056] This is the brand spanking new EP from recent IF? Records signing, Conversational Dentures, and our surprising top-seller at the moment, on the strength of last month's Mouth Wash EP. Here the conversational one goes up-tempo and far deeper, with a superbly cut-up, tangental groove underscoring the beats. Innovative and gob-smacking stuff for the new year, and beyond a bit. You can check out the sounds and get a hold of this baby on-line, exclusively via Addictech: http://ifrecords.addictech.com/ Tracklisting 1 Suicidio (Model 73 Mix) (5:20) 2 Suicidio (Léon Nagant M1895 Mix) (6:24) 3 Suicidio (7.62mm Dub Mix) (5:32) VIDEOCLIP SUICIDIO @ YOUTUBE

  9. DICK DRONE "INSOMNIA" EP (IF? Also includes a tasty, insanely catchy, somewhat banging remix of 'Wash', by Funk Gadget. This one's AVAILABLE ONLINE exclusively thru ADDICTECH http://ifrecords.addictech.com/ Plus you can potter along to that link to listen to sneak preview snippets before spending any hard-earned dosh... 14. EIN KLEINER SCHELM 'YOUR MOVE' EP (Hypnotic Room) This one's fresh out today, as an online-only release. BEATPORT: https://www.beatport.com/en-US/html/content/artist/detail/84259/ JUNO DOWNLOAD: http://www.junodownload.com/ppps/products/1359766-02.htm This is a newbie through prolific Sydney label Hypnotic Room, run by DJ Hi-Shock, Ein Kleiner Schelm is an old mate of mine (we used to play live together here in Japan before he moved back to Germany), and this is what they say in their press-release propaganda sheet thingy: BLAH BLAH "Ignore the bizarre penchant for masks that this crazy German producer tends to dabble with in his scintillating live sets – in the studio it’s his music that grabs your attention, and sustains a somewhat Teutonic iron grip right up to the final moments of most tracks – even at its more serene and laidback. First track 'Your Move' kicks off proceedings with a sensationally lazy, swirling patter of deep - minimalistic techno breaks and an equally mesmerizing chime, ever deepening, until they finally unravel and remake themselves into crisp tech-house, bordering on dubstep and subtly cut-up breaks, at the 3:20 mark. With the journey only half-way complete, the track winds on from there in serenely beautiful fashion. Dedicated to Ein Kleiner Schelm’s late-lamented pet poodle, herself named after a character in his favorite Russian novel, 'Nikita Nezvanova' is playful, funky, eclectic tech-house that weaves in and out of moments before finding a scorching club groove at 2:20, with no sense of a rush whatever. 'Caesar' goes all dark, melodramatic and orchestral, shades of Isao Tomita – sustained by restrained breakbeats, and an undercurrent of jazz/electro inflections. Thinking person’s techno under any other name, it’s assured and hypnotic stuff. The final track, a Little Nobody remix of 'Oddly Automobile', is also the most up-for-it: a funky, simple, jazzily banging number that could be called a post-modern take on Detroit techno shaken and stirred with disco, but in reality otherwise defies classification and teases the listener as it slowly settles into a wonderful locked groove. The 'Your Move' EP is techno house music that’s been constructed outside the confines of the contemporary dance music ring, then unmasked for all to see, hear – and feel." And so on. Anyway, it's definitely worth checking out if you have time, for a bit more left-of-centre tech tangents. TRACKLIST 01. Your Move (Original Mix) 02. Nikita Nezvanova (Original Mix) 03. 15. Sorry, am in Tokyo, and originally from Melbourne, so canna help ya - but why not consider organizing your own party? I found that's the best way to overcome the cheese!
  16. Hey Chenko! 31 isn't old!!
  17. Hey mate! Tokyo-based, but from Melbourne...
  18. I just had a gas-bag with Mr Begg last week, and we stuck the resultant interview up on Beatportal here, in case any of you are interested in the lad behind aliases like S.I. Futures, Buckfunk 3000, Lenny Logan, Cabbage Boy, and Dr. Nowhere versus The Maverick DJ, for labels such as NovaMute, Tresor, Ninja Tune, Scandinavia, Language, Trope, and his own Mosquito and Noodles imprints: http://www.beatportal.com/feed/item/interview-we-call-it-si-begg-house/
  19. FUNK GADGET "Blah Blah Remixes" (IF? Records) We're well and truly proud of this 3-track little baby. It's fresh today, with production only finished off at the beginning of this week, with remixes by Little Nobody and Dick Drone - twisted, somewhat wonky electronic-techy stuff, and the debut release for this new project. Available from today as a digital download, exclusively via Addictech: http://ifrecords.addictech.com/ Tracklisting: 1 Blah Blah (Little Nobody's I am a fagget Sink Mix) (6:08) 2 Blah Blah (Dick Drone Rattle And Hum) (6:16) 3 East/West (3:56) There are also sample sounds at the IF?/Addictech site to investigate, before you offer up any hard-earned cash...

Ha Ha - nope, I canna remember that one! But welcome anyway...
  21. ENCLAVE "Ironyism" [iF? Records IF043] Here's the debut release from Melbourne's Paul Derons, and the latest addition to the IF? roster. Enclave is the latest artist to join IF?, harking from the label's hometown and old stomping ground - and marks a welcome return to the "acid" tech sounds that hallmarked IF? when it first kicked off in 1995, produced by a guy who purchased his first TR-505 in 1991 - but all taken from the rather beneficial hindsight of a contemporary perspective, o' course! Ironyism is available online today as a 5-track digital download, exclusively through Addictech here: http://ifrecords.addictech.com/ TRACK-LISTING/MUZIKAL ANALYSIS BY ENCLAVE 1 Resynd (Sinhouse Edit) (8:18) "A tough, rolling techno track - largely produced on a RS7000 groovebox." 2 Ironyism (5:49) "Deep, dirty Plump DJs-influenced booty tek - with some more serious industrial textures thrown in for good measure." 3 Squelcha (Live) (5:06) "As the track name suggests, super-squelchy acid, performed and semi-improvised live on the newly remodeled Korg DS-10 portasynth/sequencer on the Nintendo DS gaming platform. Bouncy acid - super-duper tweaked before your ears." 4 Specialbraanch (6:21) "Some seriously thick swaggering booty tek - inspired as much by dirty tech/electro as it is by some of my favourite post-rock acts (The Jesus Lizard, Ricaine). Think a Rickenbacker bass played through a big muff pedal, accompanied by a crankin' beatbox." 5 Cakey (Live Remix) (8:00) "An older, unreleased remix of a wide open rolling techno/minimal track - produced and performed live on my old, trusty RS7000 groovebox." Paul, who is a Boag's Strongarm Bitter man, puts it all in perspective best himself: "I have been producing and playing a more streamlined mélange of tough electro, minimal, deep house and techno in recent times, and I believe this is amply reflected on my debut IF? Records offering," he says.
  22. ...ready when you are!!
  23. ...thanks, laddie - always appreciate any feedback, particularly from your own fine self! Yep, it's almost #50. Finally. Only taken 13 years!!
